December 1, 2010 – Woodie Griffin, Chairman of the Illinois Road and Transportation Builders Association, said the NCFRR’s plan, released today, “puts the brakes on a runaway national deficit and offers solutions to make critical upgrades to our transportation infrastructure.”

“The plan rightly establishes a user fee for those who will benefit from infrastructure upgrades,” Griffin said.

IRTBA supports the proposal because it delivers critical resources that will create jobs and facilitate economic growth in our communities.  The State of Illinois faces significant transportation challenges.   According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, traffic congestion costs Illinoisans about $4 billion in lost productivity every year. The Metropolitan Planning Council’s 2008 report put that number over $7 billion. Poor road conditions compound the problem, contributing to more economic losses, not to mention traffic accidents.

The federal motor fuels tax generates revenues that are invested in highway and public transportation improvements.  This tax has not been adjusted since 1993 and has lost one-third of its purchasing power over the last 17 years.

Griffin called the NCFRR’s proposal a reasoned plan that makes tough calls and identifies critical priorities.  “This proposal will provide Illinois the job creation that is critical to its recovery and long-term competitiveness.”

IRTBA called on Illinois’ congressional delegation to support the plan as a way to help get the nation’s economic and fiscal house in order.

Founded in 1937, the Illinois Road and Transportation Builders Association is the most effective source to protect, improve, and promote the transportation design and construction industry in Illinois. They are comprised of over 400 design and construction companies in Illinois.
