Business Improvement

IRTBA will be its members’ indispensable resource for networking, training, education, business services, innovative technologies, and positive experiences. Our 2018 business improvement goal successes include:
  • Advised members about a bad collective bargaining agreement that would bind members to a “bad for business” contract through 2020. IRTBA worked with legal counsel to resolve the situation.
  • Provided members with virtual learning opportunities via six (6) free Road Builder University Webinars. Educational topics this year included: New Tax Law & Jobs Act (featuring two education tracks – one for individual taxpayers and one for business taxpayers), Cyber Risk Management & Insurance, Navigating the Legal Requirements of Illinois' Campaign Finance Laws, Workers’ Comp Fraud and Containment Strategies, and Tollway Construction Contract Insurance Requirements & Submittals. 
  • Hosted two days of live, in-person safety training regarding the top hazards within the heavy-highway construction industry, which included preventing runovers and backovers, general work zone safety, a detailed session on the concept of Internal Traffic Control, fall protection, as well as utility and power line safety. 
  • Hosted a funding-focused Planning & Design Annual Conference with an enlightening lineup of speakers, including Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) discussing Facing the Funding Challenge and their regional plan for 2050, Mileage-Based User Fee Alliance educating members on lessons learned and future implementation of mileage based user fees, a view on funding from IDOT, and an update on Lockbox litigation and the expected outcomes for transportation funding.
  • IRTBA Board Member Charlie Gallagher represented the association and industry on a new coalition that will seek funding to accelerate road work along a 16-mile stretch of I-80 
  • Developed a new member ambassador program, which includes partnering new members with established members and volunteers from the Membership Committee to get to know new members, introduce them at meetings, better acquaint them with the association, and increase new member engagement, leading to potentially higher membership retention rates. 
  • Held a membership orientation and networking event for new members, which was attended by 56 members – the most well-attended new member orientation to date. 
  • Presented a drone demonstration to members, which included various applications for contractors to utilize drones in the field. 
  • Coordinated a meeting with Foxconn, Wisconsin DOT, IDOT, Tollway, Lake County DOT, and City of Chicago to address industry capacity issues.  
  • Celebrated the graduation of the tenth class of the Emerging Leadership Program in May; launched the eleventh class of the program in fall 2018.
  • Hosted a successful, sold out Summer Networking Event at Arlington Park Race Track.
  • The appointment of Regine Sterlin-Jeune (DB Sterlin Consultants Ltd.) to the Planning & Design Board of Directors in March marked the fourth former alumnus of IRTBA’s Emerging Leadership Program to join in service on the P&D Board. 
  • For the first time ever, IRTBA offered General Membership Meeting sponsorships and a special sponsorship bundling package to maximize exposure and cost savings for members supporting association events through sponsorship. 
  • Provided labor negotiations updates, collective bargaining information, and weekly wage package allocations to members.
