Business Improvement

IRTBA will be its members’ indispensable resource for networking, training, education, business services, innovative technologies, and positive experiences. Our 2017 business improvement goal successes include:
  • IRTBA’s advocacy efforts aided in avoiding an IDOT shutdown, which would have caused thousands of construction industry layoffs and also prevented several smaller businesses from closing their doors.
  • IRTBA leaders led contract deliberations with Operating Engineers Local 150, Chicago Laborers' District Council, Technical Engineers Local 130, and Chicago Area Cement Masons regarding contracts that were set to expire.
  • Welcomed Governor Bruce Rauner as the keynote presenter at this year’s IRTBA Planning & Design Conference on Project Delivery Innovations.
  • Produced a Road Builder University webinar on cutting-edge drone technology about data-gathering and processing and the capabilities of new aerial technology and its impact on every aspect of a project – over  its complete life cycle, from pre-planning, planning, design, construction, delivery, and ongoing operations.
  • Promoted the repeal of a USDOT rule that would have required regional Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO) to merge together, which could have caused bureaucratic delays and given Indiana and Wisconsin more power on decisions that directly impact the daily commutes of Chicago-area residents.
  • Three new agency heads at IDOT-District 1, Lake County DOT, and Will County DOT presented at IRTBA’s State of the Industry General Membership Meeting in October and networked with members of industry.
  • Hosted a New Member Social for new members and those new to the industry to meet new and established members learn about making the most out of their IRTBA membership.
  • Hosted our third largest convention to date in Aruba, with 300 people in attendance.
  • Hosted two, in-person safety training sessions on preventing runovers and back-overs.
  • Celebrated the graduation of the eighth class of the Emerging Leadership Program in May; launched the nineth class of the program in Fall 2017.
  • Kept members apprised of bid lettings and other business opportunities from IDOT, the Tollway, counties, and municipalities.
  • Provided IDOT bid results in a new Excel version for ease of sorting and tracking content.
  • Promoted member participation at an Illinois Competitiveness Council forum on the impact of regulatory reforms on economic growth, with guest speakers Governor Bruce Rauner and Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti.
  • Actively engaged IDOT and Tollway in dozens of proposed specification reviews.
