Environment

IRTBA will be a leader in establishing and implementing sensible, sustainable, and innovative practices. Our 2018 environmental goal successes include:

  • Assisted in crafting a new special provision for in-stream cofferdam work for IDOT District 1.
  • The Sustainability Council celebrated their 10-year anniversary at their Annual Meeting in January. The educational program featured project highlights and lessons learned by agency panels by the Illinois Tollway, IDOT, CDOT, and Counties and Municipalities; as well as Clean Construction Demolition Debris (CCDD); and Green Successes in Business.
  • Worked with the Army Corps of Engineers and the IDOT Bridge Committee on in-stream work issues in the field.
  • Kept members informed about the mid-year enforcement of the modifications in the renewal of the NPDES General Permit for Stormwater Discharge from Construction Site Activities, which was originally finalized on July 30, 2013 and modified on April 30, 2014 to clarify requirements for Best Management Practices (BMPs) for post-construction. The modifications became effective starting July 31, 2018.
  • Supplied feedback and comments on issues proposed by the Illinois Urban Manual, to OMP, IDOT Storm Water Committee. Also informed members when new standards relating to erosion and sediment control were to be released.
  • Provided comments on product evaluations being carried out by IDOT at University of Illinois.
  • Assisted in the crafting of the new articulated concrete block mat specification revision for the Tollway.
  • Educated members with a summary of the changes made to the ILR10 Stormwater Construction Permit that was issued on August 2018.
  • Unveiled a new name for IRTBA’s Green Council – the Sustainability Council – and along with their new name, they re-branded with a new logo this year.
  • The Sustainability Council put the spotlight on members for their green innovations (#GreenOvations), best management practices, successes, good deeds (#GreenGoodDeeds) through a social media campaign. Members snapped photos and video of their BMPs, successes, and even their office beehives (yeah, that’s right – beehives) to promote sustainability in the workplace and in the field.
  • The 2018 Convention in Marco Island featured an education track about Clean Construction Demolition Debris (CCDD), and the Emerging Leadership Program also learned about CCDD as part of their January program.
  • An expansion of the Sustainability Council’s Board of Directors included adding five, proactive new leaders to their roster to advance and promote a more sustainable transportation industry: Sanjeev Bandi (INTERRA, Inc.), Michael Cohn (Rock Solid Stabilization), Leslie Kirchler-Owen (Ecology & Environment), Craig Reynolds (Ingevity), and Josh Quinn (Bluff City Materials).
  • Suggested test locations for review of new erosion and sediment control materials to IDOT, the Illinois Tollway, and Local Roads.
  • Bestowed the Sustainability Champion Award at IRTBA’s Annual Meeting to a member firm Christopher B. Burke Engineering to honor their internal sustainability programs, innovative leadership, and environmental stewardship.
  • Reported on three Sustainability Council member firms and their Sustainable Success Stories that were innovative, and featured examples of how companies implemented changes, what methods were improved upon to achieve a more sustainable output, internal policies created by leadership and staff to reduce waste, recycle and improve sustainability and the surrounding environment, and the methods of measuring their sustainable successes.
  • Provided a forum through the Sustainability Council for Illinois agencies to gain industry input to enhance sustainable and sensible infrastructure initiatives.
  • Garnered participation on the Sustainability Council Board of Directors from the Illinois Tollway, IDOT, City of Chicago, and Cook and DuPage counties.
  • Reviewed and commented on IDOT and Tollway specification changes pertaining to landscape, stormwater management, and erosion and sediment control products.
