IRTBA will be a leader in establishing and implementing sensible, sustainable, and innovative practices. Our 2017 environmental goal successes include:

  • IEPA Director Alec Messina served as Keynote Speaker at the Green Council Annual Meeting.
  • Informed members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) exemption of the Nationwide Permit (NWP) program, freezing regulatory activity by federal agencies, speeding up the delivery of transportation projects.
  • Issued a call to action for members to contact their legislators to stress the I-55 Managed Lanes project's importance to industry, as well as illustrating the project as a critical piece of the puzzle to provide congestion relief for the motoring public.
  • Showcased statistical data and environmentally-friendly innovations by the transportation industry with using infographics on Twitter to celebrate Earth Day.
  • Bestowing the Green Industry Achievement Award to a member firm (INTERRA) to honor their innovative sustainability programs and environmental stewardship.
  • Promoted free webinar on Innovations in Asphalt Technology, including asphalt binders that enhance resistance to damage from fuel leaks and spills.
  • Advertised Army Corps & EPA public meetings to discuss the definition of Waters of the United States.
  • Reported on four Green Council member firms and their Sustainable Success Stories that were innovative, and featured examples of how companies implemented changes, what methods were improved upon to achieve a more sustainable output, internal policies created by leadership and staff to reduce waste, recycle and improve sustainability and the surrounding environment, and the methods of measuring their sustainable successes.
  • Maintained Green Council membership of 200+ member firms and agencies.
  • Encouraged member participation in the Green Industry Award, reviewed and awarded to the firm with the best application of sustainable practices and/or innovative work on a project.
  • Kept members informed about new standards being released in the Illinois Urban Manual.
  • Provided a forum through the Green Council for CDOT, IDOT and the Tollway to gain industry input to enhance sustainable and sensible infrastructure initiatives.
  • Garnered participation on the Green Council Board of Directors from the Illinois Tollway, IDOT, City of Chicago, and Cook and DuPage counties.
  • Kept members informed of comment periods for permits under review by the Army Corps of Engineers.
